Do It Like a Wahine:
Esthetician, De'Shanta' Pegues

In this section, empowered women from around the world show us how they work to achieve their dreams and what it means to be a woman in today’s society.

In this week’s section, local cosmetology student and mom, De’Shanta’, shares with us some fascinating facts about herself! I had the utmost pleasure of meeting with De’Shanta’ last weekend on the North Shore of Oahu at Kahuku beach. De’Shanta’ is the sweetest soul with the kindest heart. This was her very first photoshoot and it was so much fun shooting under the sun in the salty air and crisp ocean breeze. We talked about life in Hawaii, her two sons, and what it’s like being a mom while chasing her dreams and passions. This Alabama homegrown is nothing short of ambitious and takes pride in everything that she does! Keep reading to learn more about why De’Shanta’ is our wahine of the week.

Where are you originally from and did you ever think you were going to end up living in Hawaii?

De'Shanta': I ’m from Montgomery, Alabama and no, I never thought I would live here, glad to have had the opportunity!

How has your life changed since you moved to Hawaii from the mainland?

De'Shanta': I can say that I have become a lot better with organizing my daily life, since I have no family here other than my husband and kids. I didn’t have a culture shock but I definitely had to adjust to not being around family and not having their support with the kids.

What is your favorite part about living in Hawaii?

De'Shanta': The beaches of course, Texas, where I lived before here, we had to drive hours away to get to a beach. Here in Hawaii, they’re everywhere! Beaches are so relaxing and just a beautiful scene.

What are your hobbies and passions?

De'Shanta': I like to read here and there and I love doing crossword puzzles. I like to collect anything that’s Mickey Mouse no matter what it is. Right now my passion is becoming an esthetician. I’m currently in Cosmetology school and while there I discovered, I love giving facials, waxing, etc.!

How do you practice self-care?

De'Shanta': By treating myself out to dinner or pampering myself by getting manicures & pedicures, shopping, getting hair done, lashes, etc. Also keeping up with my skin routine & exercise routine to stay looking young!

Which is your favorite piece from Island by Koa Nani? Why?

De'Shanta': The Opalite Blue Crab Pendant is my favorite because I’m a cancer and my oldest son’s birthstone is Opal and as soon as I saw that piece, I loved it!

I also like crossword puzzles. Along with sudoku, kenken, hidden pictures, and any other word games. It’s quiet time, spending time with my self.
