Larimar Care

What is Larimar?

Larimar is a unique and rare gemstone that is only found in the Caribbean. Larimar is created by millions of years of underwater volcanic activity. Larimar was originally discovered in 1916 by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, however his request to mine the Larimar was rejected. It was rediscovered by Miguel Mendez, a member of the peace corps, in 1974. He was the one who named the Larimar gemstone. He created the name based off of his daughters name (Larrisa) and the spanish word for sea (Mar).

Larimar care made easy:

Caring for a piece of Larimer jewelry is something to be mindful of, sure, but it is pretty simple. With basic care, you can keep your larimar vibrant for a long time. For a normal day of wear, just wipe it down with a polishing cloth, or any soft smooth cloth should work. If your Larimar jewelry is in need of more than just a wipe down, turn to warm water to help remove debris.

Try to keep the larimar away from any harsh chemicals, since the chemicals will cause the larimar to fade. One chemical that can cause your beautiful larimar jewelry to fade is chlorine. Swimming pools and hot tubs containing chlorine are not larimar friendly. However, taking a quick dip in the ocean or in a river is nothing to worry about for your Larimar jewelry.

Larimar should be kept in a cool, dry box. Keeping the larimar in the sunlight can cause the jewelry to fade and become less vibrant. Specifically in temperatures over 37 celsius or 98 degrees fahrenheit. To minimize the amounts of hairsprays, lotions, hair gels, etc that come into contact with your larimar jewelry, remember that it should be the last thing on in the morning and the first thing off in the evening. “Last on - First off”.
