Do It Like a Wahine: Esthetician & Entrepreneur, Megan

In Hawaiian, the word Wahine means woman. The Do it like a Wahine blog was inspired by women, for women. In this section, we give women a platform to share their stories and artistry.

By fostering stories, we gain respect and understanding of where people come from, which expands our thinking and insights in our own perspectives. Our mission is to highlight women from all around the world to support their journey, empower others and honor them with exquisite island jewelry.

Esthetician and Entrepreneur, Megan, found her love for skincare initially through being a make-up artist. Through esthetician school, she devolved a true passion for skincare and now has her own spa business, Beauty By Meg. She prides herself on helping clients feel beautiful by reaching their ultimate skin goals and uses her social platforms to educate her followers on all things skincare. Read on to be inspired by this amazing Wahine!

Where are you from?

Megan: I’m originally from Kaua'i but have been happy to call Oah’u home for 7 years now.

How did you become an Esthetician? What do you specialize in?

Megan: There were many jobs and interests I had in the past that lead me to become an Esthetician. I always joke that I’ve lived many lives because of the number of hobbies and careers I’ve tried out in the past decade. I’ve been everything from a photographer to a florist, and even a makeup artist. But the one that propelled me into my career today would be when I started as an aspiring makeup artist back in 2015.

I had dreams to move to LA and become a makeup artist for tv shows and movies. So, the obvious next step was for me to attend esthetics school and learn more about skin, makeup, and beauty. Little did I know, I would fall in love with the skincare side of beauty instead of makeup! The art behind makeup is so beautiful, but taking care of the “canvas” (face) is also important for your overall health, confidence, and well-being. Thus began my passion for all things skincare which led me to become an Esthetician

Having worked in both day spa and medical spa settings, I specialize in blending facial treatments that are both relaxing and effective for the skin. This allows my clients to completely unwind while still enjoying the all benefits of a clinical facial treatment - the perfect balance!

What inspired you to start your own business?

Megan: My mom was my biggest inspiration to start my business. I grew up with her always writing out business ideas and sketching out inventions that she wanted to create. She taught me to be a hard worker, and self-motivated, and always encouraged my dreams. And to that, I owe her all my gratitude and how far I’ve come with my business.

What are the highlights of being an esthetician?

Megan: There are many highlights to my job as an esthetician. However, if I had to pick three, it would be my amazing clientele, the pleasure of helping my clients reach their ultimate skin goal, and the ability to share my skincare knowledge with clients and on social media platforms.

What do you love most about living in Hawaii?

Megan: Hawai’i is home and will always be home for me. I’ve lived in several other states, but Hawai’i, specifically O’ahu is where my soul feels most at peace. I love the sun, the ocean, and the people. There’s an incredible amount of love and aloha that you can’t find anywhere else in the world and I’m so grateful to live here.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time?

Megan: Lately, my hobbies include: Yoga, painting, meditation, going to the beach, traveling, and trying out new restaurants.

In my free time, you can find me grabbing a coffee or a matcha latte, spending quality time with friends, going for long walks with my dog Paiko, getting out to the beach, and binge-watching my favorite tv series.

What is something you want people to know about you?

Megan: Something I’d want people to know about me is that I’m a very compassionate person. I always see the good in others and want the absolute best for people. This year I’m learning how to show compassion to myself. We are our own worst critics, so learning to show kindness to ourselves through self-care is not a luxury, it is essential for healing our minds, body, and soul.

What are your future goals or aspirations?

Megan: My future goals are for continued growth within my business and myself, to save enough so that one day I may buy a home and to travel out of the country more often.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Megan: Don’t be afraid to fail. Failure is not the end of something, but the beginning of new opportunities. I think having this knowledge would have made me less critical of myself and less stressed out along the way.

What is your favorite jewelry piece from Island By Koa Nani and Why?

Megan: My favorite jewelry piece from Island By Koa Nani is the gold vermeil Bird of Paradise pendant because it is bold, yet elegant and a reminder of how beautiful and colorful our Hawaiian Islands are.
